Later that afternoon, a black-clad, grief-stricken Mrs. Marsh sat weeping in Clive’s arms atop a horse-drawn carriage outside Rockingham’s peeling town hall. Clive nodded to Mr. Marsh to take over and joined the steady stream of angry men and women pouring into the hall, their voices a babble of small-town confusion.

Inside the small municipal building, whirring fans positioned on every spare flat surface wafted air over a sea of roasting faces. Fisher was sitting next to Mitch Molten on the podium, along with the Mayor and councilmen, with a flag-spangled map of the area pinned to a corkboard behind them. Dana and Zoe were sitting at the back, behind the amalgam of farmers, businessmen, and town employees. Dana stared forward into space, quietly stunned.

“Mrs. Marsh told me her daughter was in New York,” she croaked.

“That’s what we all thought,” said Zoe with a sigh. “Poor Sarah didn’t get twenty miles from here before someone picked her up and bashed her skull in.”

“That’s comforting,” said Dana sarcastically.

Zoe glared.

Mayor Stan Larsen, sixties, trim, pounded his gavel over the din. “Quiet! Ladies and gentlemen, please! Quiet!”

Mitch Molten took the lectern and read his statement aloud: “On June 21st, at about 5:30 PM, the Cimarron County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a dead body discovered in unincorporated North Peperell by local FBI assisting in a search for Mr. Tyler Harris, a Los Angeles man reported missing three days prior. The victim’s name is Sarah Jane Marsh. Nineteen. Her cause of death is undetermined and occurred sometime in June 2009.”

Murmurs rippled. Dana quickly crossed herself. Mayor Larsen pulled a shroud off an easel revealing blown-up photographs of Sarah Marsh. There was a collective sigh at the sight of the smiling, innocent teenager.

“Anyone with information about this incident should contact the police immediately,” said Mayor Larsen, adding “You all know Sheriff Fisher.”

Dana whispered to her sister. “What if there’s a connection, Zoe?”

“Between...?”

“Tyler and Sarah. Two people missing in the same small town.”

“Four years apart,” said Zoe dismissively. “Let’s not jump to any conclusions.”

Dana glanced at the window, her attention caught by something outside: Clive in an intense conversation with Deputy Reese.
